News > Gogo Grandmothers LATEST Prayer Updates

Last updated on January 14, 2012

As the HIV/AIDS toll mounts throughout Africa, prayer is a primary weapon in the battles that lie ahead. "The main idea is to pray for the grandmothers, because many of them don't know the Lord. They need to know the Lord and they need His help in raising these children."
--Charlotte Day

Join in asking God for ...

  • The large 40 ft. container to be sent to Malawi. It will be loaded at Mariner's church, at the end of February, with a big drop off of collected items on March 3. Pray for all our Gogo groups and groups at Mariners, that the Lord will go before them to bring into this 'ARK' all that is needed for the preschools, gogos and teachers.

  • The acceptance of SAFE's proposal to the City Council of Zomba. It is asking them for a bit of land to put the retrofitted container on that will become a building called a SAFE Haven. It will be for Zomba residents with classes, youth program, tutoring ect. A park playground was also donated and is going in the container to be set up on the property if the city OK's it.

  • The Lord to bring steady rain to Malawi during this growing season. Jean Phiri working with the Seeds project in 6 of the Zomba villages has heard there is some drought right now. That is not good. Pray for an abundant harvest like last year for the gogos.

  • Jean Phiri who is directing the soy agricultural project again for us this year. She is in Zomba right now checking on the projects and the drought. Pray for the Lord to strengthen her for this task and give her the wisdom to do it in 6 villages this year. Pray for the extension workers who work weekly with gogos, widows and child-headed households in the villages.

  • The grant committee that is looking at out grant proposal for Impact Giving Now. This is a giving group that will consider a proposal from Gogo Grandmothers for a new project planned for a very needy area in Malawi, called Chiyambi. Pray that it will find favor in their eyes and hearts.

  • Pray for our newest village area, Kachindamoto, in the Central region.  Pray as they organize their Gogo groups with over 480 gogos from 21 villages. Pray also for the Community Based Childcare Centers that received training and are beginning the CBCCs and feeding program for the children. Pray for our SAFE staff, Mary and Cathy as they go up in January to prepare for the team of three coming from Our Savior's Church in Louisiana Feb. 8-15.
Pray for this team who will be traveling to Malawi to film and helping with the training of caregivers in the Kids Around the World, stories of Jesus and showing the Jesus film if possible. This is when we pray for no rain that night! :)

  • Sukulu's pilot project. SAFE in Malawi, has at its heart, its work with training teachers (6000 over the years) in the primary and secondary schools of Malawi as well as colleges and in other African countries. They have been hoping to have sponsors from the U.S. come along side the schools near where we have Gogo groups and CBCCs (preschools). Ndangopuma Elementary School is one of those schools, where Simiyoni village's children go. It has 1000 children and 34 teachers and it is going to be the first school sponsored in SAFE's new Sukulu project. ("Sukulu" means "school") Some of the funds for the 34 teachers has come in, as a result of Charlotte sharing in one woman's Bible study. Pray for all the teachers at Ndangopuma that can now be trained in January and given the materials to teach the Truth For Youth (Why Wait?) program in the school.

  • The successful beginning of the school Sukulu project here in the U.S. connecting schools and teachers to schools in Malawi. Pray for a leader for the Sukulu project here... perhaps a retired teacher.

  • Pray for the nation of Rwanda as they consider adopting our Why Wait? curriculum for their public schools. They are so concerned about the rising HIV infection and pregnancy rate of teenage girls, due partly to the emphasis in the last years of prevention by condom use, instead of behavior change.

  • Dick Day's knee replacement surgery that was done many weeks ago. He is having trouble with being able to extend it fully.
  • For strengthening Moira, Mary, Irene, Cathy and Ben our wonderful SAFE staff in Malawi, who work tirelessly using the many gifts the Lord has given them to teach and bless others.

Thank God for . . .

  • The opportunity to help fill a container going to SAFE in Malawi, early in 2012.

  • The gogos hearts that were touched this Christmas season, as Mary Phiri took them a treat they love, rolls and soba, (an orange soda drink). They shared the treat, but more importantly the story of Christmas and the Savior using a Kids Around the World flannel graph and Mary's message to them. Then they were each given salt, sugar and soap as a gift. There was joy and thanks!

And for Jean Phiri who is now in Zomba directing the Soy Agricultural Project again this year in 6+ of our villages.

  • The provision of sponsorship money for our first school near Simiyoni village so the 34 teachers have the training and resources to teach the Why Wait?, Jesus character curriculum in the public primary school there. 22 of our little one from the preschool have just started their first year! This is true for all of our villages just different numbers!

Her mother died when she was 6 months old and her gogo was so old and weak the chief in Simiyoni has taken her in as well as her little sister about 7 years old. She is learning to walk again. Thank the Lord that these children will be blessed in the care of this Christian woman chief.

  • The extra soy seed we were able to buy from Stephen Carr in November... enough for ALL the gogos in the Zomba villages.

  • The fertilizer money sent 10/18/11, passed out to gogos in November with much thanks and praise to God. Also, for the fertilizer that was available for them when there was such a problem with availability in Malawi.

  • The new 13 secondary school (high school) students who are orphans and now receiving school fees and uniforms. Also, for the six we are already helping. Pray for their needs to be met and for their determination to do well.

  • For all the wonderful Gogo groups here in the US who are accomplishing so much with their prayer and care for the gogos in Malawi.
  • The gogos and children who are coming showing their arms and saying, "Look, no more mosquito bites!"
  • The two radio shows our staff now record for Saturday and Sunday airings. Irene Chaluluka does a healthy parenting five minute spot and Moira Chimombo does a Why Wait? one. They both also do a weekly newspaper column on those subjects. They are getting God's Word and truth out in new ways and getting great responses. PTL
