Surprised By Laughter
by Stephen Carr

Review by Will Gaston

I whole-heartedly recommend this book. On my first trip to Africa (Malawi) I had the opportunity, by way of mutual friends, to meet Mr. Carr and share tea with him at his home on Zomba Mountain. I was intrigued by his extensive experience living and working in Africa and by his insight and realism in responding to my typical western questions of "why can't they do this" and "why can't they do that?". What captured me most prominently was his answer to my question: "You could live anywhere in the world...why did you choose Malawi?" To which he replied: "Because of the extreme poverty." And this was all before I had read his book. There is indeed much good news coming out of Africa. His book is a great read and weaves a compelling story of how we as westerners can come along-side our African brothers and sisters and work together to improve conditions for them and their families. Another lesson I learned from Mr. Carr...that it's good to not give up and to not be discouraged to the point of ceasing all effort to try to do good. I am reminded of: 'let us not be weary in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not'.

When God Stood Up: A Christian Response to AIDS in Africa
by James Cantelon
Copyright 2007, Wiley Press, 256 pages. ISBN: 978-0-470-83927-0, paperback, $17.95
Available on Amazon.com

The victims of the AIDS pandemic in Africa are far more numerous than the dead and dying. Millions of orphans and widows are trying to survive in extreme poverty and social oppression. James Cantelon, a Canadian pastor, has challenged churches in Africa-and in Canada and the United States-to unite in a common cause to bring relief to the suffering of intolerable magnitude.

When God Stood Up is the story of a remarkable journey that affirms God's presence in the most ravaged places on Earth. Millions of our fellow human beings are depending on just to be "God's hand extended." Read about their stories and be humbled.

"This is more than the story of the calling of a man to a god-sized mission. It is an informative, unfolding drama of perhaps the most critical issue of our time-AIDS in Africa. As Jim has cast and recast his vision, people all over the world have been caught and reeled in to unexpected roles, in response to the pandemic. My husband and I are in that number. Be warned as you read, you too may be stirred to action!" - Moira Brown, Co-host, 100 Huntley Street, CTS-TV
