Southern Village Updates 2010 By Mary Phiri Report on the southern Region blanket distribution and other activities The southern region village gogos have again been blessed with fertilizer money for food, one blanket each and ongoing monthly support for the CBCC feeding program and caregivers allowances, plus 'consumable' student supplies. Also, SAFE, through Gogo Grandmothers is providing formula to 3 babies whose mothers died in child birth or soon after birth and school fees provision to 4 secondary school students who are orphans. Additional expenses like funeral, sickness, transport are met as needed. The number of villages being supported now have gone up to 8 and these are Makungula, Mwaiwandigwela Ndagopuma Kondanani, Kachere- Kapitikushya, Kachere- Samuel Makoka , Kawiya -Tikondane and Kawiya- Tadziwana. Mwaiwandigwela Gogo group supported activities The gogos continue to meet weekly for prayers and encouragement. A total of 107 gogos, male and female, benefited from this years fertilizer support. Those that had a good harvest have started giving back to the CBCC for the feeding program 5 days a week. Maiwandigwela CBCC has 3 trained caregivers, 2 lady cooks, and 1 story teller [granny] the enrollment of children is at 99. Children are fed porridge mixed with groundnut flour every day. The Center has a building which was donated by ZAP. Since the children are out of school now, there is an arrangement to add 1 caregiver by the time schools resume on 6th September, 2010. A total of 83 gogos benefited from this years fertilizer support. Those that had a good harvest have started giving back to the CBCC and Simiyoni has registered the highest return and best quality of maize from gogos for the feeding program this year. Ndangopuma CBCC has 6 trained caregivers, 2 lady cooks, 1 story teller[chief-Simyoni]. Currently the enrollment of children is at 43. Children are fed porridge every day. The children look so healthy and happy since groundnut flour/soy is added to the porridge. These children learn in a beautifully nearly completed building. (Picture coming) Makungula CBCC in pictures The Makungula group is the oldest and yet the smallest in numbers. The current number of gogos meeting at Makungula is 54. Many are "charter members" and committed Makungula CBCC has 4 trained caregivers, 2 cooks, and 1 story teller [Gogo Luka, Chair of the Gogos].The caregivers, cooks and a story teller all receive a monthly allowance. The enrollment of children is at 67. The Center provides a very good Learning environment for Children. Part of the building has been renovated and the thatched grass has been replaced by iron sheets .It is hoped that the other bit of the roof will also be done in future subject to availability of funds. Children are fed porridge with ground nut flour throughout the school days. The maize is being provided by the gogos who are on the Gogo fertilizer sponsorship. (picture coming) Kondanani CBCC in Pictures Kondanani group is growing in numbers and activities The registered number of gogos is at 124. Kondanani is the only group meeting in a church...the Assemblies of God village church. The pastor is a converted Muslim and so welcomes the Muslims, both men and women to come where they hear of the reality of Christ. Kondanani CBCC has 5 caregivers who have never been trained, but have learned by "attachment" to Makungula for 2 weeks. There are 2 cooks, and 1 story teller [granny] the enrollment is very high- 118 children. The number rose due to the feeding program. The children are fed porridge mixed with groundnut flour. The community around Kondanani constructed a temporally block for the children but due to large enrollment some children learn under the tree. They have molded extra bricks and will continue as more are needed, in readiness for the construction of a better preschool. The support for the construction has come from Granada Heights Church and hopefully will be completed before the rains. Kondanani village gogos welcoming SAFE staff (picture coming) Kawiya Tadziwana: Has 6 caregivers, they are all not trained, 2 cooks. The pre-school opened its doors in February, 2010 with 20 children and as of now the number has gone up to 46. They used to learn under the Mango tree and now they have constructed a temporally shelter for the children. Children are being fed porridge. The Chief provided a piece of land to the CBCC to be used as a communal garden for planting soy/ground nut for the children. Dramatic play is how children learn- Kawiya -Tadziwana (picture coming) Kawiya Tikondane Has 6 untrained caregivers and 2 cooks. The pre-school started with 35 children from around the villages. When the feeding program started the number of children rose to 65.They are currently meeting in a small building which was built with the help from the local church. The Kawiya -Tikondane has a vibrant gogo group. The Kawiya- Tadziwana and Kawiya Tikondane gogo groups meet together on special occasions but have separate monthly meetings in their respective groups to cater for those that cannot walk long distances.
