Kids Around The World Workshop
By Mary Phiri

The "Kids Around The World" workshop was held at St. Georges Anglican Church from 4-  6  August 2010. The workshop was funded by our USA Gogo-Grandmothers partners. The participants were drawn from SAFE sponsored and other CBCCs (Community Based Childcare Centers) around Zomba. The  CBCCs of Kondanani, Makungula, Ndangopuma (Simiyoni), Mwaiwandigwela, Kaiwya Tadziwana , Kawiya Tikondane, Kachere, Kapitikushya, St Georges  Church, and Nsanama were trained.

The facilitators were drawn from the pool of students trained by the Shoreline team in 2007. The facilitators were Mary Phiri and Charlotte Day of SAFE, Lucy Phiri and Chipo Jamu, Sunday school teachers that were trained in the first cohort of The Shoreline trained Sunday school teachers drawn from Zomba.

The lessons and materials were very well appreciated by the caregivers and the Sunday school teachers. One of them said she really appreciates the training because she will be able to teach the lessons better now that she has materials to use. The other one said she has had lots of opportunities to attend the trainings for Sunday School teachers but the KAW one is unique in that it provides teachers with a lot of materials which are appropriate for teaching young children.

Practical teaching sessions were very well done by most participants. A few of them were less confident, but will improve as they practice. Special time also focused on encouraging the spiritual life and discipleship of the caregivers.

A Chichewa Bible was also provided for each CBCC.

All the SAFE staff ( Moira, Catherine, Irene ) were trained together with this group.

The SAFE staff equally appreciated their being included in this workshop because it empowered them to use the KAW materials in their other trainings in schools and villages.

Conclusion.

Please pass on our gratitude to the Gogos who sponsored this workshop and to The Shoreline team who trained us, so we are able to train others. Also, thanks for the 30 KAW kits they brought for us to use in follow- up trainings like this one.
